It had been the perfect idea: dinner with his father, the fount of information. Between the sushi and the sake, Byron filled him in on everything from the Bastis migration from the sands of Egypt to the jungles of South America and on into the States. Seth even learned just how lucrative the Bastis industries were, how far their influence stretched and how they managed to evade human notice.
He listened intently, while navigating his chopsticks between a platter of sushi and bowls of wasabi and soy. While Byron hardly seemed interested in his food, the scholar that was his father was quite attentive to the bottle of Japanese rice wine. Between particular breaks in his monologue, he took generous swigs only to emerge back into dialogue with renewed vigor.
The part concerning the separation of the Felia and Basti, Seth found intriguing as there was really no genetic difference between the two. According to his father the only thing that separated the groups was the intensity of the connection to goddess Bast. Usually gifted in the ways of telepathy, the Basti were those who were more content and at ease with their feline nature.
Not feeling the need to chime in with his own verifications, Seth simply nodded when Byron addressed him directly about his experience. He gave Byron only what he asked for, small descriptions and dry recollections, and all the time swooning over the food. Inwardly he wondered if Dominique had ever tried his hand at making sushi. As the chef had a way with everything else, surely his version of the Japanese delicacies would turn out phenomenal. Probably in bigger portions as well.
Byron began talk of something else. Hinting to something grander than both Felia and Basti, the scholar beamed over his cup of sake. Coming out of his inward trance, Seth returned his attention back to his father at the mention of a familiar topic.
“You probably wont believe me,” said Byron, his cheeks red as apples, “but manticores exist.”
Trying not to sound too knowledgeable about the mythic beasts, Seth feigned surprise. “Really?” “Yes. Really. They are great cats of enormous size with no human qualities whatsoever. They stand on all fours taller than you on two feet, have enormous wing spans and their tails resemble those of scorpions, only twice as deadly! One swipe of their paw could snap a lions neck in two and their hides are nearly impenetrable.”
And they are swift as the wind. “Unbelievable,” Seth gasped as the eel roll between his chopsticks fell into the soy sauce. It wasnt wholly an act. “Not so.” Seemingly in his element, Byron grinned. He lifted up the bottle of sake and poured the last of it into his cup. With an insistent wave of his hand, the waitress arrived with a full bottle. “Believe it or not, Crnswars father was a manticore.”
Now there was information that Seth hadnt heard or seen for himself. News he could definitely use. “Crnswar himself is the first thing that the Basti
